Manta - Ground Zero

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the Ecuadorian coast on April 16, 2016, leaving behind death and massive destruction in Bahia de Caraquez, Canoa, Pedernales, Chone, Rocafuerte, Portoviejo, Manta, and other cities. Official government statistics indicate that the number of deaths were 690; however, local populations indicate that the number is much larger. The earthquake will have major negative consequences for the coastal region of Ecuador for many years to come.
